Efficient Irrigation

Not only is water a precious resource, but is also one of the greatest costs associated with maintaining a landscape. Smart irrigation systems can use up to 70% less water than a traditional irrigation system and offer significant utility savings to a homeowner. Kyne Landscaping has partnered with Rain Bird to test and install some of the latest technology in water smart irrigation. Many points toward a LEED certification from the USGBC are associated with efficient irrigation.

Smart Irrigation Controllers

Smart irrigation controllers are the latest in water saving technology for efficient landscape irrigation. The Rain Bird ET Manager saves water by making real-time adjustments to the irrigation schedule based on hourly weather information received from a satellite. The ESP SMT has a local weather station mounted in the yard and adjusts the irrigation schedule based on temperature, wind, and rainfall. Soil sensors and rain gauges are also simple ways to upgrade existing controllers, making them more water conscious.

Drip Irrigation

Using drip irrigation to nourish plant material is one of the simplest ways to reduce water consumption in a landscape. Drip emitters concentrate water at the roots of the plant and are the most efficient means of water delivery. This also deprives nearby weeds of water, making them less likely to thrive during the summer months.

SAM and PRS Technology

Efficient lawn sprinkler heads can also be a source of water savings in an irrigation system.  SAM (Seal-A-Matic) technology uses a check valve to prevent irrigation lines from draining every time the system is used. Normal systems drain all of the water from the head with the lowest elevation and waste many gallons of water every irrigation cycle. Misting is another source of lost water. Irrigation heads are meant to run with 30 to 40 lbs of pressure, but most homes maintain at least 60 lbs of pressure. PRS (Pressure Regulating System) irrigation heads regulate the pressure for each head and prevent water loss through misting.
